After getting the position of carpenter on the railroad, I visited my parents. I mentioned to my dad that my next goal was to become an Assistant Bridge and Building Foreman.

I said, “I need a dependable watch,” and Dad said, “I will take care of that for you.” He headed upstairs to his bedroom and returned to the living room and handed me a Timex wristwatch.

Although my father wasn’t very affectionate, he did express his love for me many times in these small tangible ways.
